Other-regarding behaviour: Testing guilt- and reciprocity-based models

چکیده
We analyse two types of belief-dependant models of social preferences: guilt aversion and reciprocity. In particular, we test the relevance of their input variables (second-order beliefs and general dispositions for guilt/reciprocity). The data confirm the predictions of belief-dependant models. Both secondorder beliefs and a participant’s sensitivity to guilt/reciprocity are relevant for the decisions taken. Second-order beliefs appear to have an inverse Ushaped effect on the extent of kind behaviour. JEL classifications: C91, D03, D84

Moral Emotions and Partnership Jürgen Bracht
Actual behaviour is influenced in important ways by moral emotions, for instance guilt or shame (see among others Tangney et al., 2007). Beliefdependant models of social preferences using the framework of psychological games aim to consider such emotions to explain other-regarding behaviour. Our study links recent advances in psychological theory on moral emotions to belief-dependant models in ...
متن کاملSeparating Gratitude from Guilt in the Laboratory
In contrast to guilt based reciprocity, which hypothesizes that reciprocity is an increasing function of the 2 order expectation of trustor’s expectation for reciprocation, we test for reciprocity which is a decreasing function of trustees 2 order expectations, i.e., that people can reciprocate out of gratitude. To unambiguously decrease 2 order expectations in our treatment, we broke up a stan...
متن کاملThe Norm Activation Model: An exploration of the functions of anticipated pride and guilt in pro-environmental behaviour
The Norm Activation Model (NAM; Schwartz, 1977) is a vested model that explains altruistic and environmentally friendly behaviour. Although research states that anticipated pride and guilt are associated with the NAM, these associations are not yet fully understood. The current study provides an overview of the literature that refers to anticipated pride and guilt within the NAM. Moreover, we a...
متن کاملImplications of Game Triads for Observations of Trust and Reciprocity
This paper develops a triadic design for conducting trust and reciprocity experiments. A large literature on single-game trust and reciprocity experiments is based on the assumption that subjects utility payoffs are the same as their own monetary payoffs in the experiments. Such designs test compound hypotheses that include the hypothesis that other-regarding preferences do not affect behavior...
متن کاملAnticipation of guilt for everyday moral transgressions: The role of the anterior insula and the influence of interpersonal psychopathic traits
Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterised by atypical moral behaviour likely rooted in atypical affective/motivational processing, as opposed to an inability to judge the wrongness of an action. Guilt is a moral emotion believed to play a crucial role in adherence to moral and social norms, but the mechanisms by which guilt (or lack thereof) may influence behaviour in individuals with...
